The Birth of Buddhism

Buddhism emerged in the 6th century BCE from the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, known as the Buddha. Born into a royal family in what is now Nepal, Siddhartha renounced wealth and privilege in pursuit of enlightenment. After years of intense meditation and ascetic practices, he achieved enlightenment under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, India.

The foundation of Buddhism lies in the Four Noble Truths:

  1. The truth of suffering (Dukkha)

  2. The cause of suffering (Tanha, or desire)

  3. The cessation of suffering (Nirvana)
